A Critical Energy Resource Trapped in a Costly Supply Chain

Extra-heavy oil is disadvantaged before leaving the reservoir. Producers rely on thermal enhanced oil recovery, high water handling, and complex surface processing simply to mobilize, separate, and prepare the barrel for market. Once produced, the challenge continues: heavy oil typically requires blending with diluent or lighter crudes to move through pipelines, increasing handled volumes, consuming scarce transportation capacity, and adding cost before the barrel reaches a refinery.
Those burdens compound into persistent pricing penalties. Refineries discount extra-heavy crude for density, sulfur, metals, acidity, water, and processing complexity, while bottlenecked infrastructure can force producers into less efficient logistics such as rail, trucking, or constrained export routes. Industry insiders know the pattern well: a world-class resource trapped inside a costly chain of recovery, processing, transportation, and refining workarounds. For outsiders, the issue is simple: extra-heavy oil is abundant, but the path from reservoir to market strips away too much of its value. Solving these structural challenges in a fundamentally more valuable way is why Heavy Oil Solutions was created.

🍁 Canada: The Canadian Showcase

The Canadian Showcase is HOS’s inaugural commercial-scale project: a 2,000 BOPD hydrothermal upgrading facility designed to convert heavy oil and bitumen into a premium, pipeline-ready synthetic crude without the diluent dependence and logistics drag that define today’s Canadian heavy oil supply chain. Backed by formal engineering, FEED-stage development, modular fabrication planning, and a multi-year product purchase agreement with a top-tier North American refiner, the Showcase is structured to generate the operating, product-quality, emissions, and market-pricing data that institutional partners and future licensees need to underwrite broader deployment.

For producers, the value proposition is direct: improve netbacks, reduce or eliminate blending requirements, unlock constrained transportation capacity, lower carbon intensity, and convert produced-water handling from a cost burden into part of an integrated upgrading process. For refiners and marketers, the project creates access to a more attractive upgraded barrel with improved viscosity, density, sulfur, TAN, metals, resid, and asphaltene characteristics compared with raw bitumen or diluted heavy crude. The Showcase is the commercial bridge from pilot validation to repeatable field deployment.

For potential licensees, participation offers an early look at a technology platform that will reshape heavy oil economics across Canada, Latin America and other heavy oil regions. HOS intends the Showcase to establish the technical basis, operating playbook, capital requirements, and commercial proof points for larger 20,000 BOPD-class deployments and producer-integrated licensing models. There is an opportunity to become an informed early participant in a system designed to turn heavy oil’s structural penalties into margin, capacity, and strategic advantage. 🌎 Latin America: Basin Upgrading

Heavy Oil Solutions is actively evaluating partnerships with producers and refiners in Latin America's largest heavy oil basins (including Colombia, Ecuador, and Venezuela) to deploy our modular hydrothermal upgrading technology.

By applying our source-integrated upgrading process, regional operators can bypass pipeline transportation constraints, eliminate costly blending operations, and significantly improve netback economics. We are developing regional proof points and operating guidelines tailored to Latin American heavy crude grades. Contact us to explore deployment opportunities.
